The Cornerstone

Over the next several days, I want to focus on this stone reference. Hang with me…there is lots of “good stuff”!

What is the definition of a cornerstone? The dictionary defines a cornerstone as “something that is essential, indispensable, or basic” and “the chief foundation on which something is constructed or developed”. Here are some references to the cornerstone in God’s Word…

This is from the Lord’s challenge to Job…

"Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much. Do you know how its dimensions were determined and who did the surveying? What supports its foundations, and who laid its cornerstone as the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? Job 38:4-7

So God laid the foundation upon which creation was constructed and developed.

Therefore, listen to this message from the LORD, you scoffing rulers in Jerusalem. You boast that you have struck a bargain to avoid death and have made a deal to dodge the grave. You say, "The Assyrians can never touch us, for we have built a strong refuge made of lies and deception." Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem. It is firm, a tested and precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never run away again. Isaiah 28:14-16

In this passage, Isaiah is giving prophecy of Jesus, the Messiah. The people were longing for the Messiah to appear. God is speaking through Isaiah to reassure and comfort the people who truly feared Him the Messiah was coming. We know this cornerstone was tested and tried here on the earth, in the wilderness with Satan, all during His ministry as He dealt with the “religious” leaders of the day, in the garden as He was betrayed, on the cross as He bore the sins of the world, and finally in the triumph over the grave.
Therefore saints through the ages have placed their trust in this tried stone for their salvation. He has become their immovable “rock of ages”.

Things to reflect on:
How can people around me tell the foundation of my faith is built on the Cornerstone? Does my behavior and conduct in all situations reflect I am a sincere Christian or a hypocrite?

Tough questions, but God's word cuts deeper than a two edged sword. Father, help us to be living stones today in Your world.

The passage from Job brings back the words of a song that I hope to teach the band one day so we can share it with the entire church......

Have you counted the stars in the Heaven's,
Have you walked the circumference of the earth.
Have you measured the boundaries of the universe,
Do you tremble, at the Word of GOD!
